“Transformed Student and the Path Ahead”

“Ordinarily unconscious of his higher life, the esoteric student renders himself conscious of it, and thereby his whole life becomes transformed. As long as the soul remains unseeing in the higher sense it is guided by superior cosmic beings. And just as the life of a person born blind is changed, through a successful operation, from its previous dependence on a guide, so too is the life of a person changed through esoteric training. He outgrows the principle of being guided by a master and must henceforward undertake to be his own guide.

The moment this occurs he is, of course, liable to commit errors. … It is for this reason that so much is found in books dealing with these matters concerning the dangers connected with the ascent into higher worlds. … Yet the fact is that dangers only arise when the necessary precautions are ignored.” ~Rudolf Steiner

Transformed Student

A lot is said in spiritual schools about transformation. Some expect some sudden and drastic change similar to a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. It isn’t like that. Nor is it something that can happen instantly like Henry Hart blowing a bubble to Become Kid Danger. It is a gradual and ongoing type of change. A lot like aging, but usually more pleasant.

Guidance From Above

Some schools will tell you that students are guided by ascended masters. Others say it is angels who do the guiding. Some claim it is our own inner self. Which it is doesn’t really matter, and it may be all three of those at different times.

It is true, however that the transformed student who has a fully awakened and functioning soul no longer needs such guides. But this doesn’t mean that such students are now on their own, as Mr. Steiner believes. It means that they are now guided by the Divine Consciousness which is God. Angels and other Light Beings may still act as intermediaries, however.

Taming the Sun: Innovations to Harness Solar Energy and Power the Planet

Taming the Sun: Innovations to Harness Solar Energy and Power the Planet (MIT Press, 2018) Hardcover by Varun Sivaram (A Council on Foreign Relations Book)

How solar could spark a clean-energy transition through transformative innovation — creative financing, revolutionary technologies, and flexible energy systems.

“Solar energy, once a niche application for a limited market, has become the cheapest and fastest-growing power source on earth. What’s more, its potential is nearly limitless — every hour the sun beams down more energy than the world uses in a year. But in Taming the Sun, energy expert Varun Sivaram warns that the world is not yet equipped to harness erratic sunshine to meet most of its energy needs. And if solar’s current surge peters out, prospects for replacing fossil fuels and averting catastrophic climate change will dim.

“Innovation can brighten those prospects, Sivaram explains, drawing on firsthand experience and original research spanning science, business, and government. Financial innovation is already enticing deep-pocketed investors to fund solar projects around the world, from the sunniest deserts to the poorest villages. Technological innovation could replace today’s solar panels with coatings as cheap as paint and employ artificial photosynthesis to store intermittent sunshine as convenient fuels. And systemic innovation could add flexibility to the world’s power grids and other energy systems so they can dependably channel the sun’s unreliable energy.

“Unleashing all this innovation will require visionary public policy: funding researchers developing next-generation solar technologies, refashioning energy systems and economic markets, and putting together a diverse clean energy portfolio. Although solar can’t power the planet by itself, it can be the centerpiece of a global clean energy revolution.”

“Thought Strength for Physical and Spiritual Success”

“Your thought is your real strength. When you lift a weight, you put your thought on the muscle that lifts. The heavier the weight, the more of your thought do you put on it. If, in so lifting, a part of your thoughts is turned in some other directions, if someone talks to you, if somethings frightens or annoys you, a part of your strength or thought leaves you. It goes to whatever has taken away a part of your attention from lifting. It is mind, thought, spirit, that uses the muscles to lift, as we use a rope to pull up a weight. There is no lifting or working without intelligence.” Prentice Mulford

Thought Strength

I am writing this while the Winter Olympics are taking place. Interviews of the athletes, and the comments by reporters, tell us one important thing. The strength of the athletes mind is as important as the strength of his body. I would go so far as to say that very often the winner is the one with the strongest, most disciplined, mind rather than the one with the strongest muscles. It is often the winner thought strength that makes her the winner.

“Light-based therapy for Alzheimer’s disease”

Alzheimer’s disease, which affects more than 5 million people in the United States, is characterized by beta amyloid plaques that are suspected to be harmful to brain cells and to interfere with normal brain function. Previous studies have hinted that Alzheimer’s patients also have impaired gamma oscillations. These brain waves, which range from 25 to 80 hertz (cycles per second), are believed to contribute to normal brain functions such as attention, perception, and memory.

Using LED lights flickering at a specific frequency, MIT researchers have shown that they can substantially reduce the beta amyloid plaques seen in Alzheimer’s disease, in the visual cortex of mice. This treatment appears to work by inducing brain waves known as gamma oscillations, which the researchers discovered help the brain suppress beta amyloid production and invigorate cells responsible for destroying the plaques.

This four minute video, by the researchers, gives an overview of their work:

“Personal Redemption, Myths and Allegory”

“Long periods of probation were imposed, so that he knowledge of how to become as the gods might remain the sole possession of the worthy. Lest that knowledge be lost, however, it was concealed in allegories and myths which were meaningless to the profane but self-evident to those acquainted with that theory of personal redemption. … Christianity itself may be cited as an example. The entire New Testament is in fact an ingeniously concealed exposition of the secret processes of human regeneration. The characters … are really the personification of certain processes which take place n the human body when an begins the task of consciously liberating himself. …

“The garments and ornamentation supposedly worn by the gods are also keys, for in the Mysteries clothing was considered as synonymous with form. The degree of spirituality or materialism of the organism was signified by the quality, beauty, and value of the garments worn.” ~Manly P. Hall

Myths and Allegory

Some Christians don’t like the idea that many of the stories found in the Bible, especially the New Testament are allegorical. They think that they cannot be true, historical events, and also allegorical. That is not the case.

Jesus carefully chose his twelve Apostles so that they would have an allegorical meaning. They were still real people. Jesus may have actually turned water to wine at a wedding. But He chose to do that because it has great spiritual significance if one understands the allegory of the tale. And the disciples of Jesus didn’t write down everything He did. For the most part, what was written was that which had an important spiritual lesson hid within the allegory of the story.

“RUPERT SHELDRAKE: Science Set Free, Part 1”

Part 1 of a talk by Rupert Sheldrake at the conference ELECTRIC UNIVERSE 2013: The Tipping Point, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Many scientists like to think that science already understands the ways of the natural world. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. The impressive achievements of science seemed to support this confident attitude. But recent research has revealed unexpected problems at the heart of physics, cosmology, biology, medicine and psychology. Dr. Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and 10 books, including Science Set Free (September 2012).

“Gibran on False Prophets and Truth”

“Yesterday we honored false prophets and sorcerers. But today Time has changed, and lo, it has changed us too. We can now stare at the face of the sun and listen to the songs of the sea, and nothing can shake us except a cyclone.

“Yesterday we tore down the temples of our souls and from their debris we built tombs for our forefathers. But today our souls have turned into sacred altars that the ghosts of the Past cannot approach, that the fleshless fingers of the dead cannot touch.

“We were a silent thought hidden in the corners of Oblivion. Today we are a strong voice that can make the firmament reverberate.

“We were a tiny spark buried under the ashes. Today we are a raging fire burning at the head of the valley.” ~Kahlil Gibran

False Prophets of Gibran

While some of the false prophets and sorcerers Gibran speaks of are men of religion, most are not. They are the prophets of materialism. The scientists who deny that anything beyond matter exists. The business leaders who convince us our lives should be dedicated to working for them until we drop dead or retire. The media that tells us all the important things in lifelike sports, business, money, but noting spiritual. They are the true false prophets and sorcerers of this age.

“Teaching, Learning and Sharing Spiritual Knowledge”

“A wise man, whether teaching or learning, only wishes to learn or teach those things which are useful. He who merely has the appearance of wisdom, whether asking or answering questions, only deals with relatively trivial things.

“A person who through the grace of God partakes of divine blessings is under an obligation to share them ungrudgingly with others. … He who hides the gift in the earth accuses the Lord of being hard-hearted and mean, … while he who sells the truth to enemies, and is then revealed as avid for self-glory, hangs himself.” ~The Philokalia

Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning are never entirely separate. The wise teacher always learns something from her students. Likewise, the student always has some knowledge to share with the teacher. Instead of teaching and learning, we should probably call it information exchange.

“Two Roads Through Life: Physical and Spiritual”

“Brothers in belief, there are two roads through life, the Road of Good and the Road of Evil; they are not clearly defined roads and often run side by side and sometimes cross each other. Those who travel without a guide or in darkness often mistake one road for the other. We are those who have chosen to walk in light, in brotherhood of men who travel the Road of Good together in companionship.

“We are companions on the Great Path of the True Way, and when an instructing brother speaks of the Great Path of the True Way, he speaks of a double path. The companions of the Right Hand are those who bear the burdens of earthly labor and advancement. … The companions of the Left Hand are those who bear the burdens of spiritual labor and enlightenment, things closer to the heart of men.” ~The Kolbrin Bible (SOF:3:1-2)

Two Roads of Life

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.” ~Robert Frost

In may seem like there are many roads in life, but the Kolbrin Bible is correct is saying there are really only two. There may be many lanes on each road, but really only two roads. And as is also said in the Kolbrin Bible quote, it is often difficult for most of us to know which path is which.

“What Moves?”

Bright light. PHOTO: Arsgera (1070)

“When you’re in a boat, you see waves of water lap against the hull. If you could tie a flag to a molecule of water, you could see that molecule move up and down. When you’re at a concert, you hear waves of sound press against your ear. If you could tie a flag to a molecule of air, you could see that molecule move back and forth.

“When you tune your radio to your favorite station, you set its sensory organ–the antenna and tuning circuit–to respond to waves of electromagnetic potential energy. If you could tie a flag to … um, what exactly could you tie a flag to?

“The water or air molecule moves. You can measure its spatial displacement as it varies with time, and you can plot those measurements on a graph with displacement along one axis and time along the other. The result is a sinusoidal curve that resembles the form of the water’s surface which we call a wave.

“Hence we speak of water waves, usually without distinguishing the “real” surface feature from the metaphorical mathematical form. And we speak of sound waves, usually without being aware that the term is, in this instance, entirely metaphorical. We have developed mathematical manipulations that enable us, on the basis of metaphorical resemblances, to predict and to utilize various attributes of periodically moving water and air molecules. The wave theory of water and the wave theory of sound have been wondrously productive cognitive tools.

“So, too, we speak of electromagnetic waves. And we have developed mathematical manipulations that have been wondrously productive. We measure voltages or currents; we graph their variation with time; and the graphs have the form of a wave. But what moves? . . .”
