Spiritual Builder Using Love and Knowledge

“When God has granted you a degree of spiritual knowledge, do not neglect love and self-control; for it is these which once they have purified the soul’s possible aspect, always keep open for you the way of such knowledge.
“Dispassion and humility lead to spiritual knowledge. Without them no one will see the Lord. Since knowledge puffs up, but love edifies, unite love with knowledge and you will free yourself from arrogance and be a spiritual builder, edifying both yourself and all who draw near you.
“Love edifies because it does not envy, or feel bitterness towards those who are envious, … and it unhesitatingly confesses its ignorance of what it does now know.” ~The Philokalia

Love and Knowledge

Love and knowledge do go together. This is especially true when the source of knowledge is not spiritual, but temporal. I’m sure we can all think of people who have gathered great knowledge from universities, and lord over all around them because of it. They have too much knowledge and not enough love. And the kind of knowledge they have is nothing to brag about anyway. It is mostly knowledge of illusion that they think is reality.

To a spiritual person, bragging about such knowledge makes as much sense as someone bragging that he knows every character in every Bugs Bunny cartoon. Or the naturists who brags that he can identify the droppings of over a hundred animal species.

Not only is love required to properly use knowledge, but real knowledge cannot be found without it.

Mystery Schools and Ancient Philosophers

“From indisputable facts … it is evident that philosophy emerged from the religious Mysteries of antiquity, not being separated from religion until after the decay of the Mysteries. Hence he who would fathom the depths of philosophical thought must familiarize himself with the teachings f those initiated priests. … The Mysteries claimed to be the guardians of a transcendental knowledge so profound as to be incomprehensible save to the most exalted intellect. …
“The Mysteries were secret societies, binding their initiates to inviolable secrecy. … Although these schools were the true inspiration of the various doctrines promulgated by the ancient philosophers, the fountainhead of these doctrines was never revealed to the profane.” ~Manly P. Hall

Mystery Schools and Philosophies

Many people study the philosophies of both modern and ancient philosophers. Many are impressed by the great ideas they expressed. That is wonderful. They have much to say that is worthy of our attention in our all too materialistic age.

But when studying the great philosophers it is important to remember that they were rarely the developers of the ideas they shared. They were merely interpreting, or putting into simple language, the teachings of the ancient Mystery schools. Some of those philosophers were students of such schools. Plato is one such example. Some were even secretly teachers in such schools. Such philosophers definitely knew what they were talking about.

Thought Currents and Dealing With Them

“We need to be careful of what we think and talk. Because thought runs in currents as real as those of air and water. Of what we think and talk we attract to us like a current of thought. This acts on mind or body for good or ill.

“If thought was visible to the physical eye we should see its currents flowing to and from people. We should see that persons similar in temperament, character and motive are in the same literal current of thought. We should see that the person in a despondent and angry mood was in the same current with others despondent or angry, and that each one is such moods serves as an additional battery or generator of such thought and is strengthening that particular current. We should see these forces working in similar manner and connection the hopeful, courageous and cheerful with all other hopeful, courageous and cheerful.” ~Prentice Mulford

Thought Currents

I have never thought of it quite that way, but the image created in my head by the phrase “thought currents” is certainly an accurate one. Thoughts are energy. There is no doubt about that. Scientific instruments of today can measure this energy. They do so  well enough to tell when you are deep in thought or when you are mentally relaxed. The thought flowing our from you and others near you create flows of energy. I visualize it as a river with eddies and currents where strong-willed individuals are thinking, or where people are deep in thought, and calm areas where others are doing little thinking. This river flows with many other towards a great sea of thought.

Flowing with Thought Currents

Just as you will tend to flow with the currents in the ocean, so do we tend to flow with the thought currents. Not only o they affect how we think, they can actually affect our behavior and health. . . .

“Renovate Yourself With Spiritual Light”

“One day people will be traveling without ships, trains or planes. They will have a new type of body, shaped and structured differently. They will have a new kind of Light and Knowledge. … Then they will not toil the land as they do now, but sustain themselves in a way unknown to today’s scientists.

“To renovate yourselves, you have to get up early every morning to be able to receive the first rays of the Sun. They carry within them light and elevated thoughts. You may say that the rays of light are nothing more than vibrations oscillations of ether. It is true that light is oscillations, vibrations, but these are life-bearing vibrations.”
~Biensa Douno

Future Travel

Douno says that we will one day travel without the need for trains, planes, or ships. That day is probably a long way off. But even today it is possible with the right training and attitude to engage in spiritual travel. In this way, one can travel a great distance instantly, see what is there, and return just as quickly.

“Supreme Good and Why We Seek It”

“All mortal creatures … strive to reach one goal—the goal of happiness. Now the Good is that which, when a man hath got, he can lack nothing further. That it is which is the supreme good of all. … To this state, as we have said, all men try to attain, but by different paths. For the desire of the true good is naturally implanted in the minds of men; only error leads them aside … in pursuit of the false. Some, deeming it the highest good to want for nothing, spare no pain to attain affluence. Others, judging the good to be that to which respect is most worthily paid, strive to win the reverence of their fellow-citizens by the attainment of official dignity. Some there are who fix the chief good in supreme power; these either wish themselves to enjoy sovereignty, or try to attach themselves o those who have it. … Although opinions are so various and discordant, yet they agree in cherishing good as the end.” ~Boethius

Striving

While we live in an age where some people seem to never strive for anything, most still do strive. And nearly all strive for what they consider to be “The Good,” as Boethius states. That is as it should be.

We all need to strive for several reasons. One reason is that striving gives us something productive to do. Another is that growth comes from striving. Progress comes from striving. Those who refuse to strive, but just float through life like a piece of driftwood accomplish nothing. Even on the spiritual level, you must strive for spiritual growth. If you just sit back and wait for it to happen, it won’t.

“Spiritual Work in the Vineyards of God”

“It is preferable for man to go through sufferings rather than spend an easy, luxurious life; it is preferable for man to stay all day in the vineyard, to get blisters on his hands and to get his face sunburned rather than have no blisters and his face remain fair, not touched by the Sun. One who works at the Divine Vineyard will always have a share in it. Nature likes hard-working, diligent people while it turns its back on lazy people. … If you work, nature will help you and God will assist you.” ~Biensa Douno

Workers Rule!

If you would believe the people currently running most countries in the world, you would believe that greed and laziness are great virtues. Likewise, if you believe most in the medical community, you will hide as much as possible from the sun that is out to get you. Both of those beliefs, however, are wrong, especially for spiritual people.

This doesn’t mean you have to suffer in the sense that is often depicted in movies where saints could only achieve enlightenment after suffering greatly by prosecution, painful disease, or the death of loved ones. While it is true that such events can trigger one to began searching for spiritual truth, that doesn’t mean such extreme suffering is necessary.

On the other hand, if you think that just closing your eyes and visualizing yourself as an enlightened master will make it happen, you are also wrong. Thinking about it and visualizing it can be helpful. The most important thing, however, is working at it. Like everything else in the realm of matter, things spiritual must be earned.

“Kindling Sun And Levels of Life”

“If we consider now the springing up of the Life, and in what place of the body it is where life is generated, then we shall rightly find the whole Ground of Man. .. For we must needs say that the heart is the place wherein the noble life is generated. … So the Life in the anguish, with the kindling of the Light, takes its beginning from the glance of the Sunshine, from the spirit of the stars and elements. … For when man departed from paradise into another birth (viz. Into the spirit of this world…) then the paradisiacal vision was extinguished, where man see from Divine Virtue, without need of the Sun. …

“But the soul of Adam went out from the Principle of God, into the principle of this world. … And therefore if we would be fit for the Kingdom of Heaven, we must be regenerated anew in the spirit of God, … that it may be a fountain for the thirsty, and a light to the noble way.” ~Jacob Boehme

Life from the Heart

Jacob Boehme was not confused about sex and the physical process of making a baby. When he says that life is generated in the heart, he may mean one of two things. He may be saying that t is only because of the desires of the heart that a couple decide to have a baby, that the heart is where life is truly generated. But I don’t think that is what he meant because he says “noble life”. So he is really saying that spiritual life, or noble life, start with the heart. But he doesn’t mean the physical organ. He means the energy center, or chakra, that is centered in that part of the body. So he is really talking about awakening, or giving life to, the spirit and soul.

“Material Mind, Spiritual Mind, and the Soul”

“The mind of the body thinks that its physical senses of seeing, hearing and feeling constitute all the senses you possess. The higher mind or mind of the spirit knows that it possesses other senses akin to those of physical sights and hearing, but more powerful and far reaching. The mind of the body has been variously termed ‘the material mind,’ the ‘mortal mind’ and the ‘carnal mind’. All thee refer to the same mind, or in other words to that part of your real self which has been educated in error by the body.
“If you had been born and bred entirely among people who believed that the earth was a flat surface …, you would in the earlier years of your physical growth believe as they did. Exactly in the same fashion do you … absorb the thought and belief of those nearest you. … This makes your material mind.” ~Prentice Mulford

Mind Your Material Mind

When we have problems to solve, most of us trust our minds to come up with a solution. Either we use the accumulated “knowledge’ already in that mind, or do some additional research to find the solutions. But even when we look elsewhere, our minds will only accept as possible solutions that which agrees with the beliefs and knowledge already in it. And it isn’t only when doing research.

Everything we come in contact with everyday gets into our minds only after going through a filtering process that removes everything the mind considers false or not significant enough to be concerned about. Rarely do any of us stop to think; “What if my filters are wrong? Could they be eliminating true and useful information, and keeping ‘facts’ that support false beliefs?’

“Universal Life in a Living Universe”

“Esoteric philosophy teaches that everything lives and is conscious, but not that all life and consciousness are similar to those of human or even animal beings. Life we look upon as ‘the one form of existence,’ manifesting in what we call matter; or, as in man, what incorrectly is separating them, we call Spirit, Soul and Matter. Matter is the vehicle for the manifestation of soul on this plane of existence, and soul is the vehicle of a higher plane for the manifestation of spirit. … The idea of universal life is one of those ancient conception which are returning to the human mind. … The idea of ‘crystalline life,’ now familiar to science, would have been scouted half a century ago. … It hardly seems possible that science can disguise … the fact that things that have life are living things, whether they be atoms or planets.” ~H. P. Blavatsky

Universal Life

The idea of universal life has two levels to it. In one sense, it means that the life force is a universal one, there fore life in some form exists everywhere in the universe. The other one is that all things on Earth are alive, including the planet itself. This is the part that Blavatsky is emphasizing, but both parts of it deserve attention.

“Sun Energies, Earth Energies, and the Benefits of Both”

“The Sun energies are positive and have a beneficial impact on people; earthly energies are negative and impact people adversely. The former energies help the advancement of the person, and the latter – the fall. Connect with the energies coming from above, not with the lower energies of the Earth. Thise forces which oppose human progress, aim to cut off the communication between the higher energies of the Sun and the people, in order to place people exclusively under the influence of the lower earthly energies. As long as the Sun energies prevail over the earthly currents in people, they have the ability to free themselves from the illusions of the world, from the distorted situations in their lives. … The Sun will bring the pure, holy life to the Earth.” ~Biensa Douno

Positive and Negative Energy

There are energies which are positive, and others which are negative. It is an oversimplification, however to simply say that the energies that come from the sun are positive, while those that are from the earth are negative. What’s more, what energies we receive are as much a matter of what we attune ourselves to as it is a matter of what energies are available in a particular place.
