Northern Nevada Clergy meet October 14, 2010

The Nevada Clergy Association’s fall interfaith luncheon was held Thursday, October 14, 2010, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. About forty clergy and other religious leaders and guests attended. Members gather at luncheons twice a year to meet and discuss upcoming events, programs, and other activities. The hosting group has the opportunity to make a presentation on their particular faith tradition or talk about other important issues. At this luncheon, St. Mary’s offered a presentation on end-of-life ethics and practices for the clergy and their congregations. Other topics included were the upcoming Nevada Prayer Breakfast, the 25th Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service, and planning for the next luncheon, which will be held in the spring. The Sierra Foundation offered to host the spring event. Representing The Community at the luncheon were the Right Reverend Gene Savoy Jr., the Rt. Reverend Robert Petrovich, and the Reverend Dr. Bill Bartlett.

Clergy honor Father Bratiotis

Father George and Mrs. Bratiotis

Members of the International Community of Christ and Rabbi Myra Soifer, emerita rabbi of Temple Sinai in Reno, accepted the invitation of Saint Anthony Parish to join them in giving thanks to their pastor Father George Bratiotis for his years of dedication to God’s ministry as he conducted his final services as Protopresbyter of Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church, Reno, Nevada. These clergy attended the event as representatives of the Nevada Clergy Association to honor the many years of work Father George gave to the interfaith movement in Reno.

The luncheon program and celebration at the Cladianos Center to mark the retirement of the beloved priest and pastor was held Sunday, October 3, 2010. Father Bratiotis himself said at the event that he was honored by their presence and by the presence of the many members of his congregation, or “vineyard,” as he called them, by the memories shared, by the cards and generous gifts given, and by the many acts of kindness and remembrances displayed. The event, which included a delicious chicken dinner and dancing by the young people of the church, was inspiring, poignant, and humorous.

The Right Reverend Gene Savoy Jr., as president of the newly formed Nevada Clergy Association, presented a certificate to Father George on behalf of the association for his many years of participation in interfaith events; and as a gift of the International Community of Christ, Bishop Savoy presented Father George with an icon of the Byzantine monk Symeon the New Theologian, who is recognized as a saint by the Orthodox Church and was enshrined in 2004 by the Advocates for Religious Rights and Freedoms.

Although Father George is retired from active duty as pastor of Saint Anthony’s, he will continue to celebrate the Divine Liturgy for the parish and will be at the church during the remainder of the month of October until the appointment of a new pastor.

In attendance representing the International Community of Christ were the Right Reverends Gene and Sean Savoy and the Reverend Robert Petrovich.

The Reverend V. James Jeffery

Rector Emeritus, Trinity Episcopal Church, Reno

The Nevada Prayer Breakfast, a Nevada Tradition, has been revived by the Nevada Clergy Association for the gathering of citizens, as well as civic, business, and community leaders who are devoted to prayer on behalf of our State, and for the sharing of inspiration and ideas on the crucial need to bring the spiritual resources of the faith community to bear on issues that face Nevadans. While each segment of the faith community believes ardently in its approach to the Divine, we gather at the Nevada Prayer Breakfast as equals. Together, we devote our energies to the good of the State of Nevada. Together, we pray.

“Science encroaching on Mayan prophecy”

“Space physicists have finished assembling a second complete sweep around the sky, and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has again delivered an unexpected result. ‘The map has changed significantly. . . . Our discovery of changes over six months in the IBEX data from the edge of our solar system show that the interaction of our Sun and the galaxy is amazingly dynamic,’ says David McComas (Southwest Research Institute), principal investigator for the IBEX mission. ‘We thought the outer heliosphere would be stable over time, and IBEX is showing us that it’s not. This is changing the game completely.’”

New Video Clips of Solar Flares and Solar Winds

These clips indicate recent events that have opened questions and mysteries felt by the hard science 3-D guys. While we probably aren’t as surprised at the power of the New Sun, these images and visualization technologies are really cool. Enjoy.

Space: Solar Flare Triggers Eruption on Sun. A solar eruption sends a wave of plasma hurtling towards Earth on August 1, 2010. The event was captured by NASA satellites and explained by Discovery News Space Producer Ian O’Neill:

Space: Mystery Surrounds Solar Flare Event. Are mysterious particles shooting through Earth during solar flare events? Enough to disrupt the decay rate of radioactive material previously assumed to be constant? Discovery News’ Ian O’Neill explains why scientists think that that may be the case:

Dr. Tom Lee, NMD, APH, appointed Church Archiator

Dr. Thomas S. Lee, NMD, APH

Dear ICC Members and Friends:

I am proud to announce that I have been appointed to the position of Church Archiater (from the Greek: chief physician of a community) by Bishop Gene Savoy, Jr. I am honored to accept that post to assist our Community. I also serve in the capacity of Director of Health Services at The Church’s Healing Center & Spa at Steamboat Hot Springs, where I maintain an office. This letter is to clarify what my services are and what I can do for those who might seek my help.

I am a naturopathic doctor of a 25-year vintage, and that time has been mostly directed to general or family practice of naturopathic medicine as a licensed physician in Arizona and Washington State. My medical skills and experience include a variety of natural modalities, some of which are examination and diagnosis, physical manipulation, acupuncture, pain management, clinical nutrition, bee venom therapy, exercise rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, allergy clearing, and dermal screening energy medicine. I am an eclectic, general physician rather than a specialist, because patients really never have a single, isolated problem that they need to have “fixed.”

In Reno, we are blessed with excellent medical facilities, great urgent care, and skilled specialty practices of medicine. There are also many diagnostic laboratory and imaging services. Perhaps you have experienced these resources as expensive and somewhat confusing. I can help you to interpret test resources or even direct you to appropriate specialties at a more reasonable rate of expense.

The Healing Center’s website at www.steamboatsprings.org lists my services and time charges (which are discounted for ICC members). The front desk staff are also familiar with my services. As for insurance coverage, I work with licensed Nevada physicians and, depending on your policy definitions, I have been accepted as an out-of-policy provider for some plans. Please discuss these matters with your policy administrator.

I welcome you to come to consult with me at The Healing Center if you are looking for a sympathetic assessment of what to do, when, and where to act on your own health concerns. I get the best results with patients who are actively involved in their own health maintenance. If you are not a Reno resident, I am also available by phone appointment. Please call The Healing Center’s front desk at (775) 853-6000 or e-mail me directly at drtom@steamboatsprings.org.

I look forward to being of service.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas S. Lee, NMD, APH
