October 18, 2014: Chapel Readings

2014-PUL-Gene_Jr_pulpit_DSC_4608-FuellingS Each week of the liturgical year, a reading from Second Advent Scripture is delivered as part of the Saturday Communion of Fellowship Service held in the Chapel of the Holy Child. This reading follows the Sacred Calendar of the Church; that is, Prophecies and Revelations that have been received by The Church on sacred dates are recalled in a liturgical context during the appropriate season each year. This reading is delivered by the Officiant of the Communion Service (that is, Bishop Gene Savoy, or occasionally in his stead, Bishop Sean Savoy) just before the final blessings. Each service also includes a reading from the ancient scriptures, prayers, or wisdom sayings of various world religions past and present and is usually thematically related to the Second Advent Reading. This reading is delivered by the Reader right after the announcements that begin the service and is thus the first reading of the service. An audio recording of the reading from Second Advent Scripture delivered on the date above is provided here below together with a transcript of the first reading of the service that day.

ANCIENT SCRIPTURE AND WISDOM SAYINGS

A Reading from the Sermons of Hermes Trismegistus:

[Hermes’ son said to him:] Father, instruct me of Regeneration, either by word of mouth or secretly; for I know not, O Trismegistus, of what Substance, or what Seed, or what Womb a man is thus born.
O Son, this wisdom is to be understood in silence, and the seed is the true Good.
Who sows it, O Father?
The Will of God, O Son.
And what manner of Man is he that is thus born?
Son, things of this kind are not taught, but are by God, when he pleases, brought to remembrance.
Then tell me this, who is the Author and Maker of Regeneration?
The Child of God, one Man by the Will of God.
Now, O Father, you have put me to silence forever, and all my former thoughts have quite left and forsaken me; for I see the greatness and shape of things here below and nothing but falsehood in them all.
O Son, hold your peace, and praise God in silence, and by that means the mercy of God will not cease, or be wanting to us. Therefore, rejoice, my Son, from henceforward, being purged by the powers of God, to the Knowledge of the Truth. For the revelation of God is come to us, and when that came, all ignorance was cast out.
Whoseoever therefore has of Mercy obtained this Generation, which is according to God, he, leaving all bodily sense, knows himself to consist of divine things, and he rejoices, being made by god stable and immutable.

ANCIENT SCRIPTURE AND WISDOM SAYINGS

A Reading from the Eleventh Ode of Solomon:

My heart was opened and its flower appeared; and grace sprang up in it; and it brought forth fruit to the Lord,
2 For the Most High opened my hear by His Holy Spirit and searched my affection toward Him: and filled me with His love.
3 And His opening of me became my salvation; and I ran in His way, in His peace, even in the way of truth:
4 From the beginning and even to the end I acquired His knowledge:
5 And I was established upon the rock of truth, where He had set me up:
6 And speaking waters touched my lips from the fountain of the Lord plenteously:
7 And I drank and was inebriated with the living water that does not die;
8 And my inebriation was not one of ignorance, but I forsook vanity and turned to the Most High my God,
9 And I was enriched by His bounty, and I let go the folly which is diffused over the earth; and I stripped it off and cast it from me:
10 And the Lord renewed me in His own garment, and possessed me by His light, and from above He gave me rest in incorruption;
11 And I became like the land which blossoms and rejoices in its fruit:
12 And the Lord was like the sun shining on the face of the land;
13 He lightened my eyes, and my face received the dew; and my nostrils enjoyed the pleasant odor of the Lord;
14 And he carried me to His Paradise; where is the abundance of the pleasure of the Lord;
15 And I worshiped the Lord on account of His glory; and I said, Blessed, O Lord, are they who are planted in thy land! And those who have a place in thy Paradise;
16 And they grow by the fruits of the trees. And they have changed from darkness to light.

ANCIENT SCRIPTURE AND WISDOM SAYINGS

A Reading from the Prophet Jeremiah:

The time is coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant. . . .
It will not be like the covenant I made with your forefathers
when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt,
because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,”
declares the Lord.

“This is the covenant I will make,”
declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.”

Spiritual Love

2014-REPSolar Wind image.new.2014-09-09

“When a man begins to perceive the love of God in all its richness, he begins also to love his neighbor with spiritual perception. This is the love of which all the scriptures speak. Friendship after the flesh is very easily destroyed on some slight pretext, since it is not held firm by spiritual perception. But when a person is spiritually awakened, even if something irritates him, the bond of love is not dissolved; rekindling himself with the warmth of the love of God, he quickly recovers himself and with great joy seeks his neighbor’s love, even though he has been gravely wronged or insulted by him. For the sweetness of God completely consumes the bitterness of the quarrel.” ~The Philokalia

“People who are not spiritual will undoubtedly disagree with this quote very strongly. They will claim that they are fully capable of love for others even without any awakening of the soul or even belief in God. But the love that is addressed in the above quote is a higher love that cannot exist in those who are not at least partially awakened. This love happens when you look at another person and recognize the spirit and soul withing. You recognize that while the physical being is not of God, the unawakened spirit and soul is. And that is what the spiritual person loves.”

Incredible New Discoveries at Stonehenge

Using powerful ground-penetrating radar, investigators working around Stonehenge have detected a trove of previously unknown burial mounds, chapels, shrines, pits — and most remarkable of all — a massive megalithic monument made up of more than 50 giant stones buried along a 1,082-foot-long c-shaped enclosure.

This news is resetting virtually everything everyone thought they knew about Stonehenge.
