On October 4, 2014, two open-air second services were held at two churches at the Northland Red Rock Sanctuary.

Beginning at 9:00 am, at the picturesque Qumran Church, Deacon Stephan Fuelling read the Northland prayer in English and was followed by Rev. Shinobu Uwataki, reading the same prayer in Japanese.

The next service was held at the New Bethany Church. The Northland prayers were read first in Japanese by Rev. Miyuki Okayama and then in English by Rev. Robert Anderson.

Rev. Barbara Whitney escorted the group to and from the Northland Sanctuary and assisted the ministers and guests during the services. Guests for the second services were Rev. Mother Carol Ann Crabb, Right Rev. Yukinori Matsushita, Noriko Roy, Joseph Roy, Hiroko Soejima, Yukako Kawai, and Junko Yamamuri.

The feelings during the services were very positive, and the weather out at the sanctuary was beautiful and balmy. It was a great experience for all.

Each week of the liturgical year, a reading from Second Advent Scripture is delivered as part of the Saturday Communion of Fellowship Service held in the Chapel of the Holy Child. This is what we proclaim to you: what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and our hands have touched (concerning the word of life—and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us). What we have seen and heard we announce to you, too, so that you may have fellowship with us (and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Christ). Now this is the good-news message we have heard from him and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth. But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.

Now by this we know that we have come to know God: if we keep his commandments. Whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has been perfected. I am writing a new commandment to you which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. The one who says he is in the light but yet hates his fellow in the community is still in the darkness. The one who loves his fellow resides in the light. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions) is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.

I am not to be bribed, for I am God. He who handles fire carelessly and gets burnt cannot blame the fire; neither can he who goes into swift waters and drowns blame the waters. There are laws, the violation of which brings retribution in its train. They who by their own deeds bring pain and suffering upon themselves cannot blame Me for what ensues. These are the effects of the lesser laws which are easily understood, but above these is the Great Law, which is not so incomprehensible. “There was a time, several centuries ago, when the Catholic church allowed the wealthy to essentially bye their way into heaven by making a donation each time they sinned to gain relief from that sin. I think most of the priests and bishops knew that this didn’t work, but I guess they figured that once the rich guy died and discovered the truth, it would be too late for him to come after them for lying. You would think the story of Cain and Abel would have cleared this up, but people with money love to think that it can buy everything including a ticket to heaven. God does not accept bribes, period. Why should He? He can have anything He wants, you have nothing to ofter Him, nothing accept your dedication to serve Him in completing the Great Plan to return this planet and everyone on it to the realm of Light, the realm of God.

“It never fails, whenever there is a disaster of some sort, there are those who ask why God allows such things to happen. It isn’t God allowing it to happen, it is us making it happen. Yes, even hurricanes and earthquakes are our fault because our thought and our emotion have a great deal of control over this planet. As the quote says, when you stick your hand in fire,you get burned. God didn’t burn you. You knew the nature of fire, but you stuck your hand in it anyway.”

The Twenty-Ninth Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service, “Thanks in the Midst of Adversity,” will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

It is a worship service of prayers, readings and music from a variety of Faith traditions sponsored by the Nevada Clergy Association.

This year’s event is graciously hosted by: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 357 Clay Street (Between Ridge and S. Arlington), Reno, Nevada. Monetary and food donations will go to Volunteers of America Shelter Programs.

This event is a much-revered tradition in our local community and one that is largely unique nationwide in its scope of faith diversity—something to be very proud of.

The last five previous hosts were: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2013), St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Cathedral (2012), St. John’s Presbyterian Church (2011), Trinity Episcopal Church (2010), and Sparks United Methodist Church (2009).

Kazu Tanaka and Echan Deravy, colleagues of Yukinori Mutsuhito, our Cosolargy representative to Japan, visited the Community during the 2014 Annual Convocation of Cosolargy International. Mr. Tanaka is Chairman of the Kakuichi Corporation, and Mr. Deravy a Consultant to the President of that company. Both were here to participate in Convocation events, experience Sonatherapy at Steamboat Healing Center, and gather information and general understandings about vibrational healing technology.

Echan Deravy will be participating in Cosolargy International’s Conference on the Spiritual State of the World to be held in Japan during May 2015.

His impressions in regard to the October 12, 2014 Divine Service held at Red Rock Consecrated Sanctuary are described in a recent article posted at Japanthropolgist.com by Echan Deravy. Here is how it opens:

“This was an auspicious day beyond question. It was Sunday October 12th 2014 and somehow I was waking up at 04:50 in the most unlikely of places – a casino-cum-hotel in Reno, Nevada. It was clearly full of some of the strangest beings I have ever encountered. Now I say this without any tongue in cheek. I say this with fierce Celtic exactitude. The hotel was full of beings who appeared to be human but whose bodies and actions unfortunately suggested something else entirely. I had arrived perhaps in that Buddhist underworld called the ‘realm of hungry ghosts’..

“Their gargantuan forms lumbered from one noisy, toy-like structure to another where they seemed (to themselves) to be ‘having fun’. But in reality all I felt was the deep, abiding misery of a dispirited , materialistic civilization. It was one not at the proverbial edge any more, but one now clearly in free fall to God knows where. Here was the American dream in all its glittering obscenity, here was the end of the road weighing 300 pounds on motorized chairs – cruising along the side of the food bar, all before hitting the slot machines. Though a well seasoned world traveler this was about as bizarre as it gets.

“I share this with the reader not to simply criticize what is obviously only a small part of modern American society. I do so to highlight this bizarre cult of overeating and then dreaming of something better (a fast buck) as an unlikely backdrop to the entirely unexpected, wonderful morning I was about to have. It was an auspicious day because I would be transported from this Hieronymous Bosch nightmare to a place of transcendent beauty. Yes, it was to be a most auspicious day, the day I would meet my maker.”

Rowena Kryder passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at her apartment in Reno, NV. Rowena was a benefactress of the Church, donating her vast library of 2000 books to the Church before she moved here to Reno from Albuquerque, New Mexico be closer to the Community. She was a friend of the Church while she lived in Reno and in recent years was a speaker at the annual “Spiritual State of the World” conferences held in Reno.

She was a visual artist and writer, the author of hundreds of paintings and drawings and more than a dozen books. Her work and testimonials of those who knew her are available online at www.creative harmonics.org.

One of her friends and students says of this time of her passing: “Even as we grieve Rowena’s absence, let’s also celebrate the extraordinary gifts she has shared with us through her boundless genius and creativity. May her legacy live on.”

A message from her family follows:

“This past weekend, Rowena passed on after a long & valiant struggle with illness. She was in Reno, Nevada, her recent home.

“It is unnecessary to recount the details of her astoundingly creative life, save to say she worked tirelessly as an artist, teacher, thinker, visionary, feminist, mother, sister, and daughter. Her work and her spirit will continue to provoke creativity in all those who come into contact with it. There was a recent retrospective exhibit of her art in Pennsylvania, organized by her close student and friend Gayle Dulcey and other friends. Rowena was extremely pleased to see pieces from her earliest years to her most recent creations on display in one place.

“Rowena remained determined until the end to ensure that her vision and work—expressed through countless works of art, books, articles, and cards—will continue to inspire.

“She is survived by her sons Miles and Charlie, and their spouses Deepti and Vaughan, as well as her brothers Dick and Mark, their spouses Karen and Sandy, and granddaughter Vishaala.”
