The Tenth Saying (Part 11 of our series)
And The Man continued.
“‘Man holds his destiny in his own hands. He has all the ingredients for immortality. And God has provided the means for Man to attain his own immortality. But, in the final analysis, Man is responsible for his own evolution. The result of his actions are his own doing. God cannot be held responsible for Man’s actions. In view of this, if anyone is to be blamed for the condition of the world, it is Man.
“‘Every person illuminated by the Sun of Righteousness has the obligation to share that teaching with others. If he does not share The Teaching, his illumination will be taken from him. God wants all to be saved. The Sun shines on every person equally. God does not give you, or me, or anyone of us, more Sun than he does another human being. We are all equal in that respect. In another respect, all people are not equal in that some are richer than others; some are maimed, ill, blind; and many are not in possession of normal intelligence. Others, by accident, chance or fate, suffer and die earlier than others. I suppose this is a kind of injustice – this partiality and difference among individual men and women. But none of us made the world nor the laws that govern it. Each of us has to make it a better place in which to live. It is a hard teaching when one is told that one’s mother, or father, or brother, or sister, or daughter, or son or friend who does not apply The Teaching will not gain immortality and enter the Worlds of Light. How can this be, we ask? Where is the justice of God? Which of us loves his family or friends less because they do not apply The Teaching? None of us feels differently toward those who turn from the Teachings. We still love them; and God’s love is no less than ours. But God has told us through illuminated prophets that there is a Way to attain immortality, and if it is to be gained, we must-needs follow The Way with all of our hearts and all of our beings else we lose it forever. Are we to believe our Lord and Maker or our own limited rational minds which reason logically not by what is right or true, but like a computer that has been programmed with limited knowledge and is therefore limited and restricted in its powers to know?
“‘The world lives. We are the products of our mothers and fathers. We inherit the world as it is. And mankind kills itself because of ignorance of higher life. There is nothing as sad to behold as the human life that is lost through ignorance, both physical and spiritual. Wars, accidents, famine, flood, pestilence, disease, earthquakes, all combine to destroy mankind. I see no justice in this loss whatsoever. It is hard for me to understand. The only answer I have is one of simplicity: we must believe enlightened prophets of God who tell us how to escape the world and save our own lives. It is like Noah, in the biblical allegory, who called out to mankind to save itself, but saved himself and animal life by building an ark that survived the flood. He might have chosen to drown with the world, but in fact he decided to live. He took precautions as we must take. Therefore, let each one submit to the polishing so they may shine forth as a brilliant jewel to give light and life unto themselves first, and then to others; one cannot give to others what one has not oneself.
“‘God has sent us a messenger of Light, Jamil, who came in perilous times. He has given us a pre-knowledge of things to come. We have but to apply The System in order to transform ourselves and the world into an immortal state. The choice is ours. And herein is the justice of God who loves us. We can but inform others of the message and let each person decide for themselves, with dignity, whether he or she will follow The System or not. In this also, there is justice. It is unfortunate that Man is, to a great degree, governed by reason and logic of mind that is dictated by those intellectual processes formed from the moment of birth, by observation: of the seen world. Until spiritual faculties are developed, Man has no concept of the unseen world of sensations. Until spiritual faculties are developed, it is difficult for Man to understand that there exists much more to life than is observed. This is the value of The System – it enables the spiritual faculties to develop through a practical method.
“‘The actions of people are dictated by their culture: schools, institutions, professional bodies, news media – all predetermine what and how people think. To try to break them from established patterns is extremely difficult. Therefore, when you who are following the Teachings of Light try to illuminate your fellow and they reject this, it does not change the fact that they are asleep, and are going to die as a natural order of events. This is a hard teaching.
“‘You have two choices: you may join others and perish, or you may dedicate your whole being to the service of God in Community, according to the revealed Teachings so that you may be immortal because you love God and want to listen to your Father. It is that simple. If you try to find any other solution, any other answer to the question, you will only confuse yourself. You have to learn to accept ignorance and pain as it is—quietly, and calmly, and without judgement. The world is what Man, in combination with Darkness, has made it; a sorrowful thing indeed. There is a great advantage to faith. If you have faith in the goodness of God, then believe in the Teachings of Light and be saved.’”
