Man is a Spirit inside a Body
“That man is a soul residing within a body is the most obvious of truths. Seek not to understand it too perfectly, for understanding is a quality of the soul, and this has to be awakened.
“Is the moon different when hidden behind a cloud bank? Is the jar different buried under the sand? As these remain unchanged though unseen, so is the soul even within the body of a madman. If a lute string be broken, even the greatest musician plays a false tune. Thus, the defectiveness displayed by the madman is caused by faults within the material instrument of earthly manifestation; it is not in the spirit behind.
“Your soul came into the body as a new turn of the scroll; the sheet is clean, ready for use, but what you write thereon is recorded forever.
“Your soul is as a newly cut block of marble, upon which every thought and deed strikes a blow. It is as fresh clay cast upon the potter’s wheel.
“You alone are the craftsman for the fashioning of your soul, you alone are the artist of the design. Is it a bright thing of joyous beauty formed by goodness, or is it a dark, corrupt horror deformed by vice and
wickedness? Ask these things of your spirit, for only it knows what lies hidden within.

Spirit in a Body
The quote says man is a soul in a body, but that is not accurate. A soul exists only when man develops his Spirit, something which few bother to do. It is true, though, that the spirit resides in the body and is not part of it. Nor is it a creation of the body or mind. The quote says that the soul has to be awakened, but again, this is not accurate. It is the Spirit that has to be awakened and developed to the point where it becomes a conscious Soul.
Unchanged Spirit
As the quote says, the moon is not different when hidden by clouds, and a jar remains a jar when buried in the sand. Similarly, the spirit does not change even when it is ignored, as so many do. What the quote doesn’t say is that our behavior can affect the spirit, even when we ignore it. When we violate the Laws of God, it harms our spirit, especially if we commit murder.
The quote continues by saying that if the lute strings are broken, even a great musician plays a false tune. In other words, we don’t accomplish all that we can when we ignore the spirit. Even physical activities are affected.
A Clean Spirit
When you came into the world, you had a clean spirit, but as already mentioned, your actions can affect it. Even very minor violations of God’s Law can affect the spirit. Of course, none of us is perfect, so we all do some damage to our spirit, but we can overcome that by awakening and developing our spirit.
You are the Craftsman of your Spirit
Our spirit is created by God. It is the only part of us that is. The body and mind are creations of the Demiurge, the false god. But as already stated, the spirit is a blank slate when we arrive here. It is up to us to develop it, much like a sculptor turning a block of marble into a statue. God does aid us in that endeavor, but it is primarily up to us to awaken and develop our spirit until it becomes a conscious Soul. That is the true goal of all legitimate spiritual or mystery schools. And we should start developing our spirit as soon as possible. Don’t wait until you are on your deathbed to think of it. That is like waiting until you fall off a ship to learn to swim.
